Laboratories are among the most resource-intensive areas in universities and research institutions, with high energy and material consumption and special requirements in terms of technology and infrastructure. Against this backdrop, green lab concepts and certifications are becoming increasingly important in order to systematically anchor sustainability in scientific work.The symposium “Paths to a sustainable laboratory: Strategies and practical examples for universities and research institutions” on January 26 and 27, 2026, in Göttingen focused on approaches, certifications, and best practices for sustainable laboratory design. In addition to keynote speeches on sustainable practical examples, LEAF, My Green Lab, and alternative concepts, the conference provided a forum for exchange, networking, and joint project ideas. The conference was aimed at sustainability and Green Lab coordinators as well as laboratory and working group leaders who want to actively help shape sustainable laboratory concepts.
